Indonesia

Of the 13,677 islands of Indonesia, only about a dozen produce coffee, which was introduced by a Dutch trader in about 1696.  “Java” is the coffee most well known from the islands and was the best selling Indonesian coffee up to about 50 years ago. However, only a small portion of coffee actually comes from the island of Java.

Indonesia is the world’s third largest producer of coffee with 90 percent being of the robusta type.  The great arabicas of Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java are actually quite rare and obscure from a commercial standpoint.

The Indonesian coffees are earthy, offering tantalizing hints of crushed leaves, wood smoke, and wild mushrooms.
